Yes, it is an obvious matter that when android releases its versions, they go by dessert names and most often by alphabetical orders. Starting its order from the name cupcake, Google has restricted to the format since the launch of its first version Android 1.0 during September 2008. A quick chronological order of the versions are mentioned below in accordance with their Application Programming interface (API) levels.

Google announced on its latest version a successor on 3rd September 2013 as a successor over the last version. This version is named as Android 4.4 Kit Kat whose official release is yet to be declared.
